SECURE DOG FIELDS HALMEREND, NEAR AUDLEY

At Outward Hounds we know what it’s like to have a dog you can’t trust in open spaces. Your dog(s) may be nervous, anxious, reactive or simply have poor recall like our own dog Dexter did when younger.

During the early part of 2020 we took Dexter to a secure paddock to further his off lead training. It was a 36 miles round trip, the closest secure field we could find. When Covid forced lockdowns we were unable to travel to the secure field.

As we live on a farm, we decided to look in to creating our own secure training field for Dexter, with the intention of also offering it for private hire to the public, something we felt our local area needed.

Our planning application was finally approved at the end of April 2021 and work commenced to create our first secure dog field, which opened June 3rd.

The popularity of this field was beyond all expectations. Unfortunately the impact of wet weather on the field was also beyond our expectations, forcing long periods of winter closing. In autumn 2024, we applied for planning for a second dog field. This planning permission was granted in early 2025 and our second field opened March 19th, offering year round continuity of service.

OUR Fields

Our fields are not adjacent to each other, unlike many sites with multiple fields. At certain points in the fields you may catch sight of the other field in the distance, but this hasn’t caused any issues as yet for users to either field

Field 1

At 0.83 acre this field is gently sloping and forms an L shape, making this field particularly private for those of you with reactive dogs, as the car parking area is shielded from view of the gates. This field can be booked for 25 or 55 mins. With 6ft secure fencing, the field has a mixture of topped grass and areas of longer grass, left uncut, for lots of sniffing and scenting. It may not be suitable for those of you with poor mobility.

There is a tyre digging pit, logs to walk across, a big boulder and basic agility jumps, weave poles and a tunnel. We also have a toy “library” for added enrichment.

There is a field shelter with seating, an outdoor picnic bench, a water butt to fill the bowls provided, and a paddling pool for cooling off in.

We provide poo bags and a poo bin for you.

Note: There will often be young cattle in the adjacent field between the months of April to November.

Field 2

At just under 2 acres, Field 2 is over twice the size of our original field, again with 6ft secure fencing. The ground is more open, with the car parking area visible from all aspects of the field. This may cause issues for owners of reactive dogs when the next visitors arrive, to wait for their session. If this is the case, Field 1 may be a better option for you. Field 2 can be booked for 55 minute sessions only, to minimise the traffic along our driveway.

Field 2 has a separate small paddock with basic agility equipment and a water splash pool. The gate to this area may be closed, if you prefer your dog to not have access to the Play Zone.

There is a log, a tall stump, tyre podium, large sandpit and a scent wall in this field for enrichment. Hide treats in the scent wall, and let your dog find them. There is also a toy library and a shower in the parking area to clean your dogs before leaving.

Note: There will often be larger cattle in the field adjacent to this dog field between the months of April and November. Horses are also visible from the field. Access to this dog field is through the farmyard. Visitors are reminded this is a working farm. Please drive slowly and be aware of farm machinery and cats roaming free in the farmyard.

Visitors are not permitted to leave their vehicles in the farmyard or approach any animals.
